Smoothing flipped hair to one side is a sassy way to dress up a casual style.  With shorter strands to break up the look at the face level, America Ferrera also has some slight waves applied to her ends, possibly induced by product and scrunching.

Having longer layers that have been securely fastened, then leaving tendrils out in the front, assures you of a look that can be styled to simulate short hair.   Here America Ferrara has her hair swept to the side off of a "v'" part.   The ends were curled up as in a 'flipped-out" style.  Meanwhile, her long, thick mane has been done in columns of loose twists all around from one side of the back to the other.  These secured twirls were then gathered at the base of the skull, leaving a ponytail of curls coiled tightly enough, they resemble a 'messy bun'.
